Morning chill

Posted in Uncategorized at 8:11 pm by kmarch

Got up this morning thinking about how it is great to be in this part of the world.  Looking out over a garden full of cats who will not be harnessed and thinking about where I’m going today.  There are so many places to be, all connected to the fingers and mind writing this.  The cats will not be able to go with me, of course, but I’ll come back to them.

Today is for guessing how tomorrow will turn out after the night wears thin.

Travel.  It all starts with that first shiver.

This

This is what I want to write about, or rather don’t want to write about but do something about.  It is a perfect example of what happens when people have no idea of where they are in the world.  This is what you can see if you stand beside the Frog Rock and look out:

So tell me why anybody would ever want to stick those stairs on the side in order to be able to climb up another few feet and look out?  I knew A Curota was an amazing place, with wild horses and myths, historical significance and of course an ecological role to play in the part of the world.  What I didn’t know was there were people so dumb as to think humans needed a few more feet to lord it over this expanse.

I watched a single male walk up, look around for all of 30 seconds or maybe it was 45, then walk down.  he may have taken a picture.  For one monstrous moment I hoped he’d fall off, or at least get vertigo and almost fall off, to serve him right.  Wonder what he got that was worth anything to take way with him?

Wonder why he traveled – maybe just 10 minutes from the door of his apartment – to this spot to stand, point, and shoot?  Wonder which one of his friends told him he could be taller if he did it?  Wonder if anybody cares about the photo he took?

I don’t, that I know.

What is travel?

Posted in Uncategorized at 1:40 pm by kmarch

A simple, even childish question.  Travel is going somewhere.  or going from there to here.  or maybe from here to there.  But you still have to know, despite the direction being traveled in, where you’re coming from and where you’re going.  Rubén Darío knew about that when he wrote “Dichoso el árbol que es apenas sensitivo… y no saber ni adónde vamos ni de dónde venimos.”  And you ought to know whether you want to go and if you want to come back.

This blog is slow in getting started, but I know why.  Once it finds the right path – there are so many right now it’s difficult to choose – then rambling will be far too easy.  Be patient, please.

Journeyl

No, the title isn’t spelled wrong.  I may decide to change, but for now it’s my attempt to cross journal with journey.  I’ve finally decided to start getting serious about traveling and putting things down… not on paper, but at least in writing, about what going places really means.

Right now I haven’t figured out where to start, either, but probably the best place is where I am.  That would be Santiago de Compostela.  Or not quite.  About 7 kms outside the city, approximately.

More later.
